Our Story: The Artistry Behind Naperyry - Japanese Obis

Modern Textile Art of Antique Embroidered Obi of colorful Chrysanthemums

Our Story

My journey into Naperyry®️ began with a deep appreciation for Japanese textile traditions and an enduring love for craftsmanship. Growing up, I was always drawn to the beauty of fabric—its texture, patterns, and the stories woven into each thread. But it wasn’t until I encountered vintage Japanese obis that I truly found my artistic calling.

Each obi—the decorative sash worn with traditional kimonos—is a masterpiece in its own right, created by artisans who preserved centuries-old weaving, embroidery, and dyeing techniques. These fabrics tell stories of Japan’s rich cultural heritage, from imperial motifs to nature-inspired designs that symbolize longevity, prosperity, and harmony.

Unfortunately, many of these exquisite textiles are tucked away, forgotten, or discarded over time.

I saw an opportunity to honor and preserve these timeless works of art by transforming them into contemporary home decor. Through Naperyry®️, I give these vintage obis, barkcloth and heirloom fabrics new life, meticulously repurposing them into textile wall art. Each piece is thoughtfully designed to bring elegance and history into modern living spaces, allowing their beauty to be appreciated in a new context.

My inspiration comes from Japan’s deep-rooted aesthetics, particularly the concept of wabi-sabi—the appreciation of imperfection and the beauty of aging materials. Every thread, every shimmer of silk, and every intricate motif carries a history that deserves to be shared. When you bring one of my pieces into your home, you're not just acquiring decor—you’re embracing a legacy of craftsmanship and tradition.

In addition to my Japanese collection, I also offer hand-framed textile art crafted from fabrics sourced in the antique markets of Italy and Austria. These European textiles, rich with their own stories and artistry, bring a different cultural perspective to my work. Whether featuring intricate brocades or delicate embroidery, these pieces complement my passion for preserving and showcasing the beauty of global textile traditions.

I invite you to explore my collection and discover the artistry behind each unique piece. Whether as a striking wall accent or a conversation-starting table runner, these textiles connect the past with the present, weaving together culture, elegance, and timeless design.
